Where is Canary Wharf in London?

Thirty minutes east of central London on the Tube, Canary Wharf is a business and residential complex where one of the busiest ports in the world once stood. It sits on a peninsula of the River Thames and is almost completely surrounded by the river and its docklands, which gives the area a distinct look.

With great links to central London, Canary Wharf is easily accessible via the Canary Wharf Tube station on the Jubilee line, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and both road and river buses.

What is the appeal of staying in Canary Wharf?

Although not in the city centre and smaller than many London areas, Canary Wharf has a distinctively cosmopolitan feel which is complemented beautifully by the surrounding boat dockyards.  Like a city on its own island, well connected to London with easily accessible and fast transport links.

Almost completely surrounded by water, with stunning views of The O2 Arena (Millennium Dome) and some of the tallest buildings in Europe, the Canary Wharf area has a very sophisticated, international ambience and residents enjoy a riverside lifestyle. It also benefits from three shopping centres, a museum, the UK’s largest collection of public art and a network of cafes and restaurants, including some onboard luxury boats.

During the summer, many events are hosted here, from paddleboarding on the docks to open-air film screenings. And during the winter, one of London’s famous ice rinks takes residence at Canada Square.

Things to do in Canary Wharf

Find a café or restaurant with river views or watch the skyscrapers light up as the sun sets. Go for walks along the river bank, admire the boats on the docks or watch them glide past on their way to Greenwich or central London.  Visit the Museum of London Docklands or The Crossrail Place Roof Garden.  Indulge in a little retail therapy, follow the art trail and spot public sculptures or take part in one of the many seasonal events.  There is even a farm and equestrian centre!

And if you manage to fit all that in, a short ride on the on the Tube or the DLR and explore all the attractions in Central London or in the neighbouring Greenwich district.

Places to eat in Canary Wharf

From British to Thai cuisine, via Mexican and Spanish, you will have no trouble finding restaurants, coffee shops and bars around Canary Wharf. The shopping centres and areas immediately around them are all home to high-street and independent food chains.
